This little Chameleon’s markings identify it as a juvenile Veiled Chameleon. Like many other chameleon species, they use their long tongues to snatch insects to eat. Many species of Chameleon can change color for the purposes of camouflage, communication, and temperature regulation.
Chameleons are found in Africa and Asia, though they have been introduced and become invasive species in the United States, in places like Hawaii, California and Florida. Chameleons have many unique features, including their long sticky tongues used to snatch up insects, their armored eyes that move independently of one another, their distinctive zygodactylous feet, their prehensile tails, and their shield-like head crests. But by far they are most well-known for their color changing ability. They accomplish this by changing the amount of space between crystals found in their skin, which changes how light reflects on it.
